Casting a little flavor (and a few aspersions) on the world of food, drink, and life

Category: Food & Recipes

A look at local food discoveries, whether it’s a particular dish or an ingredient, often with one or more recipes.

My Favorite Chowder

Buenos Aires – Back in 1991 I was attending Peter Kump’s Cooking School in New York, making some vague attempt at refining the cooking skills I’d learned from my mother and, separately, from “Papa John” Falsetta (that’s another whole story). I don’t remember the genesis of the idea, I think it was a conversation between… Read More My Favorite Chowder

Salsa!

Buenos Aires – First I have to introduce the last important ingredient in the salsa I’ve been nattering on about for a week, the rocoto (also known as locoto in Bolivia). While certainly not the only hot pepper of Peru, it is probably one of the most important, especially when it comes to fresh peppers.… Read More Salsa!

Unfair Enticement

Buenos Aires – This is a bit of a tangent off my usual food posts. But, like many folk, these lovely little packets provide for quick and easy afternoon or late night snacks. I think I’ve been eating them here and there for a couple of decades now! And since introducing him to them, Henry… Read More Unfair Enticement

Tuna Shakes and Cucumber Sausages

Buenos Aires – I’ve been having fun, as summer produce has been appearing more and more at various markets, finding new and different items. Wandering through a local farmer’s market the other day we came across a pile of tunas. Back in the states I knew them as cactus pears or prickly pears. We picked… Read More Tuna Shakes and Cucumber Sausages

Empanadas from the Sea

Buenos Aires – Thankfully, I will probably never get tired of sampling empanadas. I say thankfully, because, of course, I’m surrounded by them. It’s not quite a daily battle to avoid biting into these tasty pastries left and right, but sometimes it seems pretty close. You can buy them on the street, you can buy… Read More Empanadas from the Sea

Shrimp & Rice

Buenos Aires – Taking a break from restaurants (though, I’m out to a new place tonight with friends – I believe we’re going to an Armenian restaurant, so hopefully I’ll have some fun things to report) gives me a chance to go back and play some more in the kitchen. For lunch today, we wanted… Read More Shrimp & Rice

Mamón

Buenos Aires – Let’s just call this Papaya Porn. A very traditional dessert from northern Argentina and into Bolivia, the papaya, which is known as mamón in those parts, is candied in cane syrup and its own juices and served lightly chilled. Yum!
