I’ve not had that experience, honestly, pretty much anywhere over the years.

Still, there’s no question that San Jose is not quite the paradise that the tourism board promotes it as. At the same time, I haven’t felt unsafe at all wandering around, at least during the day, and taxis are easy to get (even easier because they now have the EasyTaxi system here, so I can book one from my cellphone in a matter of seconds) and quite inexpensive.
