It’s a reasonably good deal, at around 70 to 80 pesos per person depending on whether you want a cocktail or not, as it includes lots of little extras. But, we were less than impressed.

Malvón - brunch

All the brunch items include a small apertivo of the day – yesterday’s was a strange blend of grapefruit juice, Cynar and grenadine that just wasn’t all that pleasant. The little fruit cup with housemade granola was actually my favorite part of the brunch, but my companion didn’t like it at all, finding the granola too dry and wishing for some yogurt instead. The cornbread muffin was dry and mealy, a surprise given how good their breads are, but then, perhaps it’s more like their pastries, which we weren’t thrilled with on the lunch visit.

Malvón - brunch

The main courses that we tried fared little better. We liked the limonada with its touch of mint, nice and refreshing. The choice of alcohol cocktails was limited and not all that interesting, but I’ll give you that that’s us. A good Bloody Mary (which our waiter and the others he asked had never heard of) is more our style. The eggs benedict – a wispy bit of English muffin below, almost just a shard. The eggs, perfectly cooked, gotta give them that. The hollandaise, however, tasted of nothing but gooey egg yolk and butter – no acidity, no seasoning, and just an unpleasant texture. The Norwegian popover was massive, but likewise unseasoned, and my companion left a good half of it as just too much to deal with. Interesting options for side dishes – an octet of possibilities – the onion rings, crispy and light, the guacamole nice and fresh if a bit too pureed, served with tasty, but strange little triangular bread puffs that weren’t designed for scooping up guacamole. Other choices that we considered – chicken wings, but turned out they’re in sweet bbq sauce not hot sauce, and the “gazpacho of the day”, which was a borscht (that’s gazpacho?) – which we just weren’t interested in.

Again, however, the breads served with the meal were thoroughly impressive, and the little glass of strawberry butter was a delight. I leave it as Recommended, but I doubt I’d go back for brunch again, but I’d head there for lunch sandwiches anytime.
