I agree with deby, there is no shame in calling a spade a spade - the majority of pizza places I visited (8-10 at least) were all uniformly horrid, all but one - Filo. And even thought that was good eats, it paled in comparison to North Beach Pizza here in San Francisco.

Pizza is among those dishes that have more or less lost their place of origin. I've had both amazingly great pizza in Italy, as well as less than great. The same in my home town of New York, in New Haven and other celebrated U.S. pizza cities. Chicago makes what's generally my least favorite pizza.

On both of my visits to Buenos Aires, I was extremely pleased with the quality of the various pizzas I had. Some were very plain, but honest and good. Others were so good they could have come out of a brick oven in Tuscany. Of course, with Dan as a guide it would have been unusual not to eat well. BA has a heavy Italian influence, so it's hardly surprising that the pizza there is good.

Well said Dan. and thanks for not defending the pizza here - enough of this empty praise, more people need to stand up and say the pizza here is terrible, how else can we affect change?

Mike, one might suggest that your nuance and tact might also be... less than subtle. Still, since it appears that Tom intends to return and check out some decent pizza here (and, Tom, the offer is genuine), if you promise to behave reasonably civilly, I'd love to have you along. ;-)

Gates has all the nuance of a gangbanger on a drive-by shooting. I'll bet that you struggled with even the idea of commenting about him. He's not in your league, Shake.

If Tommy ever takes you up on your offer to show him a good pie or two, lemme know if I can tag along! But from his post, I seriously doubt that he's all that curious ...about anything.

Wow! I really had no idea that this pizza thing would become what it did. I've been doing this world trip and made note of the bad ones that I ran into. The truth is, I ran into way less than I'd have thought I would. (The one that got away was Scotland's Deep Fried Pizza...everytime I went to find one, I ended up seeing a GOOD pizza place and, well, I have the reserve of a labrador.) I guess that this is as good a forum as anywhere to apologize for generalizing about an entire country's pizza. I had no idea that I was running into some kind of pizza-pride parade. It does, however, make me feel better that I wasn't completely out of my mind in my assessment of the bad ones that I'd eaten - I encountered The Valdez more often than not. I WELCOME a good pizza in Buenos Aires and look forward to finding one. I'm back for January/February and will definitely take you up on the offer. You'll have to forgive the fact taht my first few days, though, will be spent eating the side of a cow.
