I have to agree with you. I grew up in Tapiales (the barrio right next to the Mercado Central) and my parents still live there, yet we rarely visit the mercado central for fruits and vegetables because it´s just not worth it. I went a couple of weeks ago to the warehouse area to check out "Gra productos naturales", a store constantly touted by chefs and advertised in the magazine of ElGourmet.com all the time, yet their prices were quite high and they didn´t have unusual produce (though I´ve read they work with restaurants and get them stuff on demand). But anyways, what I would recommend you check out is the fish section of the market, my dad has been buying there for months because they have a good selection, fresh produce and great prices.
Oh, and about the estancia, it is lovely indeed, I went to a party there years ago and was utterly enchanted.

We love our Farmer's Markets - there are a ton of them here, every little town has one. The big ones are just remarkable... can't buy meat at ours yet, though. Refrigeration is an issue...

Would I bother to go to this market? Are you kidding? This would be one of the first places I'd visit in B.A. Just looking at your photos, it's obvious that this is the real thing. I love the wide variety and colors of the produce, as well as the smiling pig's head.
