Sorry to hear about your experience at Bengal, sounds like you had it far worse than we did, though it may have gone downhill since our visit - we haven't been back. In terms of expectations, I've come to learn that given the virtual lack of any Indian population in BA, it's not realistic to expect much in the way of authenticity of flavors, and have come to appreciate the places that do make an effort for at least giving it a shot and offering up an alternative to standard local fare. Of course, no one else is charging the prices that Bengal does... next time you're here, I recommend trying Tandoor if you find yourself with an Indian craving.

I second that opinion. I ate alone there in August, 2007. My Argentine landlord, said this was the most fantastic food in the city, that his family ate there often. I ordered Indian food, not Italian. I was given the wine routine too and I was jus buying one glass! Whenever I did need help with something - such as needig cutlery - the waiter disappeared and the food went cold. I sent it back for reheating. The dishes were miniscule, under-spiced and bland. That rice is an insult to Indian cooking. I lived in London, England for a decade where good Indian food is a weekly institution. Now, I live in Canada where it isn't and I have to rely upon one local restaurant that's not bad. In contrast, Bengal's dishes were so poor that had my best local delivered it to my door, in no time , I would have been on the 'phone immediately, demanding, "Take this back and refund me because this is not up to yours or anyone's standard!" My impression is that some rich portenos find the idea of "indian" flavours exotic, and can impress their friends by taking them to Bengal simply because it's unusual (Indian/Italian!) and mostly because it is so expensive. This was the worst meal I had in Buenos Aires in 5 weeks of eating out daily.

Funny, the waiters below ignore and the one here is overly attentive. ;-)

I like the sound of the lamb.
