Ahem, I only paid enough attention to them to be able to report on them here... Really, I did need to keep waving them over to ask questions. It was all in the interests of proper, full, detailed, umm research...

Are you sure you were smelling bacon, and not just your fellow fire fighters?

No, no. Of course you paid no attention to the wait staff, Dan. I know what a dedicated professional you are.

I went about two years or so once eating no meat. It wasn't too difficult until one summer college break when I was working for the U.S. Forest Service fighting forest fires. After being out all night, our crew came back to the ranger station we were staying at (our base was Mt. St. Helens, right on the shore of the then-lovely Spirit Lake, in Washington State). Tired, charred and starving, I sat down in the mess hall where huge, heaping platters of bacon, sausage and eggs were placed on the table. Ok, I'm as stubborn as the next guy (maybe even more), but come on! The sweet, smoky aroma of bacon has to be the great equalizer to any vegetarian regimen. Since that day, I've been a card-carrying carnivore, and I've never looked back.
