Brascó and Portelli seem to be at odds on a lot of wines. I've disagreed with some of their individual pronouncements and then aligned myself with others. In general I would have to say my tastes seem to be closer to Portelli's, although I find he is too easily swayed by pedigree and cost. Brascó seems to rate the higher end more stringently than he does the lower. He wants his money's worth.

Nice to know the inside scoop about how wines are rated. With no formal training, I've basically taught myself most of what I know about wine aided by a healthy dose of travel to some of the great wine producing regions. I usually look at Parker & Austral's published opinions as suggestions... I think that's where ratings are the most valuable. Say you want to branch out, explore a new variety, & have no idea where to begin. Read about it. Then try a few & come to your own opinion. Like you say, the individual is the final judge. Good to know you're on the panel of Austral. They do a much better job than Brascó, who doesn't seem to know how to write a single sentence without throwing in a borrowed word of English, French or whatever. Portelli is much more educational than Brascó but will have to wait until the old guard retires... or drinks too much. Austral seems to be a solid publication & will be looking for the new edition for my next visit to Mendoza. Saludos.
