I have to admit that the paragraph about the 2nd Avenue Deli is a trifle unfair. I do hope they reopen somewhere. But, I can't 100% blame the new landlords. Apparently, prior to his untimely demise (does one ever have a truly timely demise?), Abe Lebowohl had negotiated a long term lease with the former landlords that included a renewal for 2006 with that increase. Given the size of the jump, my guess is they must have held steady at the $24k mark for a few years or something, planning on being able to do better by 2006 and pay more. After all, wasn't it just about 2 years ago that they completely renovated the second dining room to make it a little "fancier?" So truthfully, the rest of the family can't really claim that it was all that surprising, it was part of the lease that the new owners became party to when they bought the place. And, for god's sake, given the raving success that the place was, why, when the building went up for sale, didn't the Lebewohls just buy the damned thing!
