The Scent of Green Bamboo

2006.Jan.25 Wednesday

Buenos Aires – If you’ve never seen the movie The Scent of Green Papaya, it could be summed up in a nutshell as beautifully presented, and somehow engaging despite it’s lackluster acting and complete lack of plot. In many ways that parallels my thoughts about our visit last evening to Green Bamboo, Costa Rica 5802, [...]

Shrimp & Rice

2006.Jan.24 Tuesday

Buenos Aires – Taking a break from restaurants (though, I’m out to a new place tonight with friends – I believe we’re going to an Armenian restaurant, so hopefully I’ll have some fun things to report) gives me a chance to go back and play some more in the kitchen. For lunch today, we wanted [...]

Mamón

2006.Jan.23 Monday

Buenos Aires – Let’s just call this Papaya Porn. A very traditional dessert from northern Argentina and into Bolivia, the papaya, which is known as mamón in those parts, is candied in cane syrup and its own juices and served lightly chilled. Yum!

Readings

2006.Jan.22 Sunday

Buenos Aires – Very simply, I need a break. From eating. I know, for someone in my field that seems like heresy, but truthfully, we all need one from time to time. I’ve been out with visiting friends the last couple of days and nights eating up a storm, and just reached, well, a wall. [...]

Native Craft

2006.Jan.20 Friday

Buenos Aires – My friend Max and I set off to do a little museum-going yesterday afternoon. Max is my Spanish teacher as well, and a good part of yesterday’s mission was to keep up a non-stop conversation for a couple of hours about museums, neighborhoods, art, and food – I think I managed pretty [...]

Feeling Peevish

2006.Jan.19 Thursday

Buenos Aires – I’m feeling peevish as I’ve just come up against one of those “it’s just the way it is” situations and have yet to figure out a solution. Many things in this country are easy, some far easier than they would have been back home in the U.S. Other things are just not. [...]

Highs and Lows of the Season

2006.Jan.18 Wednesday

Buenos Aires – Coming from a country like the U.S., where vacations are taken more or less at random, living in a place like Argentina can be a bit awkward when official vacation time rolls around. It’s much like trying to visit Italy in August; other than businesses catering to tourists, everything else is closed, [...]

Mondays

2006.Jan.17 Tuesday

Buenos Aires – “One seventh of your life is spent on Mondays.” “Mondays are not part of the productive work week.” – Dogbert “Mondays suck.” – Garfield Actually, I generally like Mondays. I’m not good at Sundays as they tend to involve being far lazier than I’m happy to be. Mondays are good days to [...]
